DW Distribution Inc, established in 1955, is a family owned and operated two-step wholesale distributor of Building Materials and Millwork Products serving Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico markets.
Our Millwork Distribution Center is located in DeSoto, Texas. From this 425,000 square foot campus we stock an industry leading array of millwork products and manufacturer door units. Our millwork product offering includes: a vast offering of traditional and decorative Mouldings, several designs, types and species of Doors, Jambs and Frames, Glass, Sills, Hinges, and Fiberglass and Wood Columns along with a rich offering of complementary Millwork Products.
Our Building Material Branches are located in DeSoto and Round Rock, Texas. Our building material offering includes: Roofing and Roofing Accessories, Siding, Dimension Lumbers, Studs, Plywood, Specialty Lumber, Engineered Wood Products, Sheathing, Insulation, Housewrap and an array of complementary Building Materials.

Vernon Potter and J.R. “Bob” Byford co-founded Dallas Wholesale Builders Supply Inc. in 1955. Working hard to support his young family Vernon recognized the building industry was a whole lot more about people than products. It is Vernon’s vision and ability to be flexible despite some hard times that has allowed DW to succeed. Vernon, now retired, holds the very much deserved title of Chairman Emeritus.
Byron Potter joined the company in 1973. Having led the company as CEO since 1985 to 2014, Byron is now Chairman. Byron has been instrumental in leading DW through a significant growth era in which DW expanded into new product categories, opened new branch locations and made a variety of acquisitions. He began and has led our continuous improvement efforts to ensure DW remains the market leader. Byron has been active and with the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW) for over 20 years and in recent years with Texas A&M’s Industrial Distribution Program.
Nathan Potter serves as President & CEO. Nathan grew up working in the warehouse during the summers. It was then that he developed a passion for DW and the industry. After graduating from college he joined DW full time in 1998. He has excelled in various roles including outside sales, sales management, purchasing and sourcing. Each of these roles has provided Nathan with unique customer and vendor relationships and insight while recognizing the value customers need and expect from a distributor. Nathan’s vision and leadership provide DW with the internal drive to continuously seek and develop long term customer and vendor relationships for decades to come. Nathan has been active within NAW, Texas A&M’s Industrial Distribution Program and the Association of Millwork Distributors (AMD) Board. He was recently named President of AMD.

J.R. “Bob” Byford hated the idea of working for a big company, so when a large national company bought William Cameron Company of Waco, TX, where he served as Sales Manager, he knew it was time to go. He convinced his wife Eleanor of this around a camp fire one night in Colorado, and when they returned to Waco he solicited the support of Vernon Potter, also working at William Cameron. The new company would be located in Dallas. Mr. and Mrs. “B” would open the business March 1, 1955 and get the administrative tasks done, then Vernon would join them two months later, on May 1, 1955.
Dallas Wholesale Builders Supply Inc (DWBSI) moved from just a dream to reality and the rest, they say, is history. Distributing Ideal Millwork and Rubberoid Roofing products, DWBSI celebrated revenues of $50,000 that first year. Their first location, shadowed by “Pappy’s Showland Club”, was cheap to rent, but it left a lot to be desired. The good news was they outgrew the space in 9 months and moved. It took just two more years to realize DWBSI once again needed more space. DWBSI found space on East 15th Street in Oak Cliff, conveniently located between two lumber companies: Lyon-Gray and Don Cameron. This was a sign of things to come.
DWBSI grew right along with their good customers on 15th Street. They all were running out of space. Lyon-Gray Lumber sold out to C. D. Phillips who formed Phillips Lumber in Cedar Hill. Homer DeFord, also of Lyon-Gray, formed DeFord Lumber in Duncanville. Roy and Carl Ivey purchased the Lyon-Gray property for Ivey Lumber Sales and DWBSI had another prosperous customer with which to grow. Don Cameron Lumber moved out and John Tinsley Lumber moved in. When Ivey moved to a new location on Peavy Road in east Dallas, DWBSI purchased their property. DWBSI continued to acquire open land and homes along 15th Street until it reached Ewing Street. In 1978 DWBSI acquired John Tinsley Lumber Company.
Byron Potter, Vernon’s son, was extended an opportunity by Mr. B and his father to join DWBSI to form a purchasing department. He started working at the company full time after graduating from SMU in 1973, having worked summers there since the age of 13. The same year Joe Cornett was promoted to Sales Manager. DWBSI grew rapidly over the next ten years. In 1976 Rick McLaughlin joined the firm as Merchandising Manager and Robert Harris and Betty Evans joined in 1979. Robert went into outside sales and Betty became the company’s first Advertising Manager.
Things, however, were not always easy. Leasing the area directly beneath the Marsalis Parkway overpass that crossed the Oak Cliff property as a roofing storage shelter was genius—inexpensive and accessible. However, one night in early 1980 a young transient fellow flicked a cigarette through the fence surrounding the roofing storage area after becoming annoyed with the guard dogs inside. A stack of old pallets caught fire and the subsequent four-alarm blaze destroyed the roofing stock and warped the steel trusses of the bridge—forcing the City of Dallas to revoke the company’s lease. Faced with the decision to either forgo the roofing business or continue, DWBSI persevered, leasing property in east Dallas to begin a larger stand-alone Roofing Division. Mike Cornett was selected as the Roofing Location Manager and led the way to adding Elk and Owens Corning to the company’s flagship GAF roofing brand.
In 1987, DWBSI had the opportunity to acquire Sunbelt Moulding Company. Eddie Jones, Jack Carson and the dedicated folks at Sunbelt helped DWBSI dramatically increase its moulding presence and the geography it served. DWBSI moved to a 12-acre property in east Dallas and consolidated its new acquisition into the property as well. But 1987 also brought tremendous challenges. This same year Vernon Potter elevated himself to Chairman and promoted Byron Potter to President and CEO in order to give clear leadership and direction to the company during the crisis.
Quitting was not an option. Sticking to its principles and faith, the Company became stronger than before. After five years of difficult business conditions, 1992’s efforts finally brought a profit, which was doubled in 1993 and doubled again in 1994. DWBSI had survived its most serious test to-date.
Stabilized business conditions allowed the company to begin thinking more strategically. The Company built a Round Rock Building Material Branch in 1995. DWBSI became “DW Distribution Inc” in 1997 to reflect the commitment and focus to the dealer business.
The Company sold its east Dallas location in 1999 and on 21 acres in DeSoto, TX, constructed new offices and its flagship Millwork Distribution Center. The Company acquired Northeast Texas Wholesale Lumber in Greenville, Texas in 2002, allowing it to add a complete lumber offering to its building material branches. In 2005, DW finished Phase II in DeSoto with its 144,000 sq. ft. DeSoto Door Fabrication Plant and 60,000 sq. ft. Loading Canopy.
DW’s leadership continues its strategic journey, always looking for better ways to partner with vendors and serve customers. Vernon Potter continues as Chairman of the Board; Byron Potter is Vice-Chairman and CEO; and Nathan Potter, Byron’s eldest son, presides as President. The company’s commitment to industry improvement has led to active relationships with such organizations as the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), Texas A&M’s School of Industrial Distribution, and the Lumberman’s Association of Texas (LAT). DW’s commitment today reflects the founding motivation to avoid “big” and “office politics”.
The demographics and economic growth drivers in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Louisiana remain strong and will continue to generate growth for the future. DW is very proud of our long term vendor and customer relationships and look forward to growing with both for years to come.
DW operates a fleet of 40+ semi tractors and a specialized fleet of trailers. In late 2012, our entire fleet will be upgraded to 2013 Freightliner Cascadia units. This will provide us with the newest and most fuel efficient fleet. DW was the industry leader who first began using curtain side trailers and has continued to customize its trailer platform and securement systems to ensure damage free, quick access and ease of loading and unloading. Your millwork products are staged and loaded under our covered canopy to ensure your merchandise is protected from the elements until they are delivered safely and timely to you.
